Romance and sustainability: create a wedding with less environmental impact
The sustainable event trend has been turning into a necessity. The number of clients looking for event professionals that can consider sustainable options in every step of the process keeps increasing every year. That’s why, being such an important topic, keeping up to date with new solutions is key for this industry’s professionals.
During IBTM Americas 2023’s edition, Monica Olivares hosted a conference called “Sustainable events on the romance industry: more than just a trend”. Through the presentation, she quoted different guidelines and regulations that define the requirements for an event to be considered sustainable. According to her presentation, there are several specific criteria to be considered from the early organization stages in order to create the most sustainable event possible.
Monica, a national professional environment consultant and a Greenhouse Gases Inventory Verificator stated that, for this type of event, especially for a wedding, “you need to design, plan, operate and close the event based on the goal of taking actions to preserve our environment, promoting a healthy and inclusive society while supporting local economy”.
Undoubtedly, the event planner’s skills are a decisive factor when a challenging situation can change the client’s mind. However, different tools and sustainable friendly options, have been really helpful to reduce the negative impact on the environment. Besides, alliances between event planners and providers have become a very successful and popular strategy, allowing both to offer a better option to the client with a very competitive price while meeting different requirements for sustainability at the same time.
This strategy resulted into a domino effect that caused a lot of companies and brands to start looking into more environmentally friendly solutions, in order to become a better option for other suppliers and planners to choose them.
These results are proof that looking for an alternative could become an example of a positive standard that other professionals might be willing to reach too, causing a great impact not only in the MICE industry, but also on their clients and destinations, proving once again how important and impactful this industry can be at a national and international level.
