Ecotourism: sustainability in the travel industry

The trend towards sustainability is gaining more strength due to the growing need to care for the environment. That was one of the main reasons why the travel industry began to create alternatives that could be sustainable and interesting for its audience as well. The most popular is the ecotourism.

The main goal of this form of traveling is to enjoy and learn as much as possible while reducing the impact of the visit and not altering the ecosystem of the place, as well as its natural diversity and the culture that exists there. This strategy result in a traveling model that has minimal negative impact on the environment of these destinations.

Besides the most evident advantages in tangible aspects, the social and cultural aspects would boost economic growth, which would also allow more visitors to know and experience these wonderful places around the planet.

On the other hand, ecotourism has the potential to become the main economic source for these protected areas, allowing them stability and promoting the sustainable development of the most important natural areas around the world. Some of the most known ecotourism destinations are:

  • Calakmul, Campeche
Being a Biosphere reserve and classified as World Heritage Site since 2014, it’s one of the most protected natural places in Mexico. With more than 300,000 hectares of jungle, it’s the perfect destination if you want to admire the natural diversity that this country has.
  • Xilitla, San Luis Potosi
If you’re looking for something different, Xilitla could be your new favorite place to become an expert in ecotourism. This green paradise has one of the most famous gardens of the planet, being the perfect candidate if you want to learn about the positive impact we can achieve.
  • Blue mountains, Australia
Located near Sydney, this place is not well known among travelers, although it has recently gained popularity as an ecotourism destination. The camping zone is perfect for witnessing how a natural ecosystem works and learning how to affect it as little as possible.  Blue mountains is made up of different National Parks, and this organization will allow you to learn as much as possible in one of the most amazing corners of the world.
  • Cabo Palmo, Baja California Sur
This National Park does not allow fishing activities, because the main goal of being an ecotourism destination is to appreciate what already exists and learn from it. Home to more than 200 marine species, Cabo Palmo is the only existing Coral reef in the Sea of Cortez.

Once the social distancing restrictions began to lift, ecotourism became one of the strongest ways of travel, as many people became more aware of their impact on the environment during the pandemic.
